Batalha

Batalha is a Portuguese village in the district of Leiria.
It developed around the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, ordered by King John I of Portugal.
Construction began in 1386 as a vow by the king, who promised to build it if Portugal defeated Castile in the Battle of Aljubarrota on 14 August 1385.
Every August, large celebrations take place near the monastery to commemorate this victory.
The Monastery of Batalha is a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic architecture, with multiple influences due to its long construction period.
Inside, highlights include the Founders’ Chapel with stained glass windows, cloisters, the Unfinished Chapels in Manueline style, and the Chapter House.
Around the monastery, several 18th-century houses remain, including the Parish Church with a Manueline portal.
