Coimbra was also the capital of the kingdom during the 12th and 13th centuries.
When Afonso Henriques decided in 1139 to move the capital from Guimarães to the south, he chose Coimbra.
A city of narrow streets, courtyards, stairways and historic monuments, it preserves its rich past to this day.
Coimbra played a key political role throughout the centuries, especially during academic struggles and under the dictatorship, becoming a symbol of the fight for democracy.
Coimbra has many points of interest, such as the University of Coimbra, the Botanical Garden and Quinta das Lágrimas, which witnessed the eternal love of Pedro and Inês de Castro.
It also features monuments, churches, museums and historic cafés.
Today, Afonso Henriques and Sancho I rest at the Monastery of Santa Cruz.
