Nazaré is a parish in the district of Leiria. Its foundation is linked to the legend of Our Lady of Nazaré and the discovery of her image.
Fishing has always been the main economic activity in Nazaré. The first references to fishing in Nazaré date back to 1645, and by 1870 it had already developed significantly, with around fifty-eight huts used to store fishing equipment.
However, with the industrialization of fishing and the construction of the harbor, traditional fishing lost its importance and nowadays only a few people still practice it.
The oldest settlement in Nazaré is Pederneira, whose name appears in several medieval documents and ancient maps as "Seno Petronero".
Facing the sea on the right side, there is an impressive cliff. This is Sítio, where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Portuguese coast. It is a 318-meter cliff dropping straight into the ocean. At the top stands the small Chapel of Memory, where the legend is told of the miracle performed by Our Lady, stopping the horse of a nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, from falling into the abyss. True or not, at Suberco viewpoint you can see the supposed horseshoe mark left on the rock that foggy morning of 1182.
Tourism has also grown thanks not only to the magnificent beaches of the parish but also to its gastronomy and culture.
