OLHÃO

Located in the Faro district, Olhão is a town that preserves the traditional Algarve atmosphere and boasts beautiful beaches, some of which are only accessible by boat.
Today, Olhão still retains its fishermen's quarter and its famous fish market, considered one of the most impressive in Portugal. The town is also known for its distinctive rooftop terraces, inspired by North African architecture and reminiscent of Morocco.
Behind the market, beside the harbour, stands a replica of the vessel 'Bom Sucesso'. In 1808, this small boat sailed to Brazil to inform Prince Regent João that the French troops occupying Portugal had been expelled from the Algarve. Without navigation instruments and relying only on a rudimentary nautical chart, seventeen men from Olhão completed the journey in just two and a half months. In recognition of this remarkable achievement, the town was granted the honorary title 'Vila de Olhão da Restauração' and received permission to become an independent municipality with its own town council.
