Porto is the second largest city in Portugal.
It was awarded the title of “Best European City Destination” in 2020 and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Porto is the city that gave Portugal its name, which was once known as Cale. The city has evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times.
Originally, Porto was a small Celtic village on the banks of the Douro River, where the Romans built a maritime port called “Portus Cale”. Over time, the name evolved into Portucale, giving rise to the name Portugal.
The city was later conquered by the Visigoths, who were expelled by the Moors. Moorish rule lasted until Porto was reconquered by the Christians.
Porto developed into a major maritime and commercial centre, becoming the leader of the Portuguese shipbuilding industry.
