Silves, the former capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve, is one of the Algarve's cities that best combines natural beauty with an outstanding historical heritage.
During the Islamic occupation of the Algarve, Silves was an important administrative and governmental centre. From its imposing red-brick castle, the Moors defended the entire region, while boats sailed along the Arade River from its port to trade with North Africa.
Following the Christian Reconquest, Silves became the capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve.
