AZEITÃO

Azeitão was once the seat of a municipality abolished in 1855 and is now part of the Setúbal district. It is known for its wines, cheeses and the famous Azeitão pastries, a name linked to the abundance of olive groves.
The region has traces of ancient occupation but gained prominence in the 15th century with noble families settling there.
Historic estates, palaces and fountains still define the landscape today.
Major wine producers include Quinta da Bacalhôa and José Maria da Fonseca, known for Moscatel and Periquita wine.
Azeitão cheese is considered one of the best in the world and its pastries are a regional specialty.
Pastelaria Cego, founded in 1901, is one of the most traditional bakeries in the area.
